Abstract

This article describes some of the main characteristics of the small French Manufacturing firms which were the first to connect to the Internet. It shows that these firms are in general more innovative, that their production process is more computer intensive, and that they are more concerned with product quality. Much before deciding to connect to Internet, they were in average more productive and had a work force which was higher-skilled. The fact of being a subsidiary of a group has also a an important positive impact on the probability to be connected, while the fact of having a young firm manager as a positive impact which is rather weak, even if statistically significant. Classification JEL : C33, C35, D21, D83, D89.
