Drawing on music venues in Paris, this paper analyses how cultural hierarchies are reproduced by cultural policies and public funding. Although current public policies include all music genres, they continue to make a distinction between them depending on the diversity of style and listening mode. Meanwhile, the live music market undergoes a strong process of economic concentration following the decline in physical music sales. These transformations constrain the work of bookers in independent venues, although their reputation and their specific booking practices are used to attempt to maintain the balance between economic and musical criteria in their artistic selections.
