Abstract

French competition policy was born in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War as a mere extension of price policy. Its main aim was to modernize the distribution of goods in order to lower prices. Between 1977 and 1986, a genuine and autonomous competition policy was eventually set up. Since then, French competition policy has gradually been strengthened, while at the time becoming increasingly Europeanized, as the European Union has acquired a leading role in this area since the late 1980s.
