Abstract

Among the multiple criticisms raised against the idea of public opinion, one of the most vocal claims that subgroups have competing interests and are not equally able to promote their own peculiar interests. This article presents an overview of the long-lasting debate in public opinion research, focusing on whether social and policy preferences are consistent. It draws some conclusions about how these preferences can be assessed both at the individual and at the aggregate level.
