Abstract

The objective of this research is to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on formal and informal employment in Cameroon. The descriptive analysis, the Chi-squared test, and the logistic analyses carried out on data collected from 827 households and 160 companies from all regions of the country, three months after the first case of COVID-19 in Cameroon, lead to interesting results. The study was conducted at the beginning of the pandemic, and it shows that even though it had a fairly modest impact on work and earnings at that time, some of the working population, particularly those in the primary sector and in services other than trade, suffered significant losses; younger people under 35 and men were more affected. These results contrast with government measures, which could create new inequalities due to their inadequacy.
