Abstract

This paper re-examines the effects of remittances on institutional quality. To do this, we use different variables of institutional quality and the empirical investigation is based on a large panel of 102 countries over the period 1990- 2015. The results of fixed effects regressions suggest that remittances adversely affect institutional quality in recipient countries, even after controlling for potential reverse causality. These results have important policy implications.
