La création du quartier portugais de Montréal. Une histoire d'entrepreneurs

Abstract

This paper discusses the impact of entrepreneurs in creating a district and an ethnic community. More particularly, the last four decades have seen Portuguese residing in Montreal develop a complex and prosperous community. They have started up organisations, enterprises and communication and information services in their own language. Who are the main actors that founded the Portuguese district? The fundamental question is to determine whether the entrepreneurs are social and economical change agents, capable of creating ideal conditions for sociability and the affirmation of the cultural values of the Portuguese society in Montreal. Also, in a more general manner, we aim at understanding, through the history of the creation of an ethnic district, the importance of the entrepreneurs and their influence on the social and economical changes that we witness in our society.
