Abstract

Recent developments in economic activity call for a renewal of the tools for analyzing the impact of agglomeration on economic activity. By drawing on the ideas of Paul Claval in relation to cities and on those of Alfred Marshall concerning industrial districts, we propose to use thenotion of switching in order to analyze "the agglomeration economy". By switching, we mean the capacity to establish variable and temporary relations between many different partners. This capacity is based on a communication system which juxtaposes and combines technical and social networks. In conclusion, we propose to represent the contemporary "agglomeration economy" as being based less on the fact that it belongs to the same "world of production", as on its ability to connect disparate, completely unrelated milieux.
