Eastern Countries' Gender ans Science :Analysis and Meta-Analysis

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to provide an insight into the current state-of-the-art of women academics and researchers in the Eastern countries with a particular focus on the scientific fields of ‘Natural Sciences’ and ‘Engineering & Technology’. By ‘Eastern countries’ we mean the former post-communist countries, which are at present the ‘new’ EU Member States + Croatia - which is currently in accession process for EU membership. The other objective of the paper is to illuminate the changing trends of the research on gender and science carried out in the Eastern countries for the time span 1980-2008, structured into eight preliminary defined topics: 1) horizontal segregation; 2) vertical segregation; 3) pay and funding; 4) stereotypes and identity; 5) science as a labour activity; 6) scientific excellence; 7) gender in research contents and 8) policies towards gender equality in research. The paper is based on the findings of the Eastern country-group s t u d y of the ‘Meta-analysis of gender and science research’ project. (www.genderandscience.org).
