Abstract

At the latest when the baby boomers are retiring the number of closing farms should increase rapidly and the farms should become bigger and bigger. In the long run rural family businesses, which the goods-cooperative’s business model is focused on, threaten to die out. In addition, the danger for demand monopolies on regional markets for the purchase or lease of agricultural land is increasing. This negatively affects the formerly active farmers. New cooperatives could counterbalance this development by forming market counterweights or offering alternative agricultural production.
