Abstract

Sustainability is not a matter of course in the mountain railway industry, although sustainable practices exist. In order to be able to make recommendations for action for strategic management, 1500 guests of German, Austrian and Swiss mountain railway companies were asked in an online survey about their perception of the sustainability measures of mountain railways. Overall, sustainability is a decisive selection criterion for only every tenth winter guest to travel to a mountain railway. However, a majority of the guests perceive burdens due to the mountain railway activities. At the same time, the sustainability measures implemented by mountain railways are only noticed by a minority. Thus, there is potential in both implementation and communication.
