Community Resilience in Urban Tourist Destinations: How Beer Garden Romance and a Hygge Localhood Boost Social Capital

Abstract

Considering the continuously increasing visitor pressure on urban destinations and the simultaneous media coverage about overtourism, analysis about the tolerance and resilience of stressed communities has become essential for tourism research. The paper at hand firstly summarizes various models about community resilience and social capital of urban destinations based on a literature research. Secondly, two case studies – Copenhagen and Munich – are with the help of a qualitatively analysis of expert interviews presented and tested on their coherence with the previously created model. As a result, diverse factors, which influence the social capital of an urban destination community and therewith, the resilience towards growing tourist numbers, are highlighted.
