Abstract

Zell am See-Kaprun is popular among tourists from GCC countries, but Arab travelers are often perceived as disruptive factors whose perception is strongly influenced by stereotypes and prejudice. This contribution is based on an empirical study (2013-17) with method triangulation that interviewed Arab and non-Arab tourists as well as people from the local population. It has been shown that the responses of local people working in the tourist sector are ambivalent, stressing economic benefits on one hand and (emotional) burden of socio-cultural differences on the other. Conflict potentials arise in daily life situations and interactions in which diverging social norms and values as well as culturally specific patterns of thinking and behavior occur. Transparency and communication between all involved actors would promote a conflict-free and friendly co-existance.
