Abstract

It is usually argued that socialism is a collectivistic ideology and, as such, the antagonist of (classical) liberalism. The present paper explores the inverse viewpoint. Socialism is presented as the extreme or ultimate form of individualism and as the ideological successor of liberalism. The Marxian exploitation theory and the present-day fight for the rights of minorities (under the label of identity politics) are both guided by individualistic ideas. The collectivistic interpretation of socialism stems from the historical tendency of the modern, individualistic state to increase its powers in the name of liberty and equality and to cover society with an increasing number of bureaucratic rules that, in the end, choke the very liberty and equality they were conceived to protect.
