Abstract

Supporters of the Unconditional Basic Income expect great benefits upon its introduction: It would guarantee freedom and self-determination, overcome poverty, strengthen social cohesion and democracy and solve the problems of the welfare state. Even more, some supporters associate the basic income with an economic system working free of economic incentives. However, realistically considering the effects of incentives, the financing the basic income appears to be very challenging. Thus, financing of a basic income at a substantial level would require to abandon the current welfare state, a step contrary to the ambitious aims of most supporters. It seems preferable to refrain from a large-scale social experiment with an uncertain outcome and to reflect on Karl Popper’s warning and to continue on the cumbersome path of reform and piecemeal work.
