Indicadores para anticipar la evolución de la actividad económica

Abstract

La utilidad de contar con señales anticipadas sobre la evolución de la actividad económica es evidente para los conductores de política económica, empresarios, inversionistas y trabajadores. En Bolivia, el principal indicador de corto plazo de la evolución del producto es el Índice Mensual de Actividad Económica (IMAE), calculado por el Instituto Nacional de Estadística. Este índice es difundido con un rezago de alrededor de tres meses, lo cual hace importante el intentar pronosticar su comportamiento. El estudio propone indicadores para anticipar la evolución del IMAE mediante la estructuración de modelos econométricos con formas funcionales sencillas. Los agregados monetarios M'1 y M'2, la producción de cemento y la cantidad consumida de energía eléctrica resultaron ser variables útiles para pronosticar el comportamiento futuro del producto. En general, los pronósticos efectuados mostraron similitud con el patrón de crecimiento del IMAE y, al margen de ciertas diferencias de magnitud, alcanzaron el objetivo de mostrar anticipadamente la evolución de la economía.
