The Role Of Education In Developing A Culture Of Sustainability

Abstract

This paper takes an institutional approach to analyzing the role of education in adopting sustainable development practices. It assesses the influence of the existing individual values on the capacity of countries to follow sustainable paths and suggests possible ways to make education a pillar for building a culture of sustainability. Study objectives relate primarely to establish the role of universities to become a potential agent of change towards sustainability. Thus universities can develop sustainable practices, can form skills to integrate, synthesize and analyze systems, can do research based on real world problems and promote and strenghten the interactions between individuals and institutions. The developed study is materialized in a model regarding the formation and development of a sustainability culture being based on six successful key domains : environment, local impact, curriculum, standards for sustainability, skills and scientific research.
