Abstract

The authors investigate the determinants of strike activity in a random sample of British collieries in the 1927-38 period. A review of the literature leads to the identification of six models of intercolliery strike activity. After following a general-to-specific modeling strategy using probit and Tobit techniques, the authors conclude that the significant factors causing the observed intercolliery variation in strike propensity were colliery size and a number of variables interpretable as indicators of the organization of industrial relations in the colliery and district concerned.
