Crime and Unemployment in Scotland: Some Further Results

Abstract

This article reexamines the link between crime and unemployment in Scotland; an issue that was originally addressed by R. Reilly and R. Witt (1992). Extending Reilly and Witt's data set by three observations is shown to lead to a significant reduction in the impact of unemployment upon crime. Furthermore, time-series analysis for each region and for Scotland as a whole provides no support for the view that unemployment has a significant impact on crime.
