Gershom Carmichael on 'Demand' and 'Difficulty of Acquiring': Some Evidence from the First Edition of Carmichael's Commentary to Pufendorf's De Officio

Abstract

This paper considers G. Carmichael's use of the term demand and its importance to the translation of a passage from his commentary to S. Pufendorf's De Officio relevant to the development of price analysis. A new translation of this passage allows us to highlight the relationships between the scheme of price determination put forward by Carmichael and those put forward by other authors. The discussion touchs also upon A. Smith's views on the role of cost and demand and shows that his analysis of price is developed along lines already contained in Carmichael's and F. Hutcheson's works and in older traditions. Copyright 1993 by Scottish Economic Society.
