An Economic Study Of Optimum Fertiliser Applications And Plant Population In Maize

Abstract

A ‘profit maximisation’ method of statistical analysis, which is fully described, was carried out on a maize fertiliser and plant population trial conducted at Cedara. Under the cost structure assumed it was found that the optimum profit level was to be obtained from an application of 143.9 lb. of N as limestone ammonium nitrate, 154.2 lb. of K2O as potassium chloride and a plant population of 34,881 plants per morgen. As no increase in yield was obtained from further applications of phosphate above the lowest level of 95 lb. P2O6 per morgen, this nutrient was excluded from the analysis. Should grain prices rise or fall, the increase or decrease in the rates of fertiliser application can be calculated, so as still to obtain the most economic return.
