Abstract

The specialization and role of Siberia in the Russian economy is revealed, the problem of understating the macro‐region share in all‐Russian economic indicators by official statistics is highlighted. A quantitative assessment of the global economic and geographical position of Siberia relative to the key world markets is given. The main features of the modern territorial structure of the economy and population of the macro‐region are identified and considered. The leading trend of transformation of this structure at the post‐Soviet stage has been established: the shift of industry to peripheral (mainly to northern) regions with the intensification of resource‐raw material specialization and the formation of new territorial‐production complexes.
