Innovative capabilities of users of agricultural R&D services

Innovation at farms is crucial to face technological, environmental and social challenges of the agricultural sector. Our hypothesis is that access from farmers to research & development services (RDS) is enhanced by certain entrepreneurial attributes (market orientation and learning orientation) as well as by their innovative attitude and human capital, as innovation capabilities. We explore the role of these factors in a sample of farmers in a region of Spain (Valencian Community), which is a context dominated by small and medium‐sized farms. Through a logistic equation modelling approach, we tested the conditions that increase the likelihood to be users of RDS. Our findings suggest that both strategic and innovation capabilities, as well as a high level of formal education, are positively correlated with farmer's willingness to make use of RDS, while the largest group of farms shows a lower probability of adoption of RDS. Policies promoting knowledge intensive support services can pay attention to the fact that more innovative and educated farmers are also those who interact more with RDS, even in a context where small and medium‐sized farms prevail. La innovación en las explotaciones agrícolas es crucial para hacer frente a los retos tecnológicos, medioambientales y sociales del sector agrícola. La hipótesis de este artículo es que el acceso de los agricultores a los servicios de investigación y desarrollo (SID) se ve favorecido por ciertos atributos emprendedores (orientación al mercado y orientación al aprendizaje), así como por su actitud innovadora y su capital humano, como capacidades de innovación. Se examina el papel de estos factores en una muestra de agricultores de una región de España (Comunidad Valenciana), que es un contexto dominado por explotaciones agrícolas pequeñas y medianas. A través de un enfoque de modelización de ecuaciones logísticas, se probaron las condiciones que aumentan la probabilidad de ser usuarios de SID. Los hallazgos sugieren que tanto la capacidad estratégica como la de innovación, así como un alto nivel de educación formal, están correlacionados positivamente con la voluntad de los agricultores de hacer uso de los SID, mientras que el grupo más grande de explotaciones agrícolas muestra una menor probabilidad de adopción de los SID. Las políticas que promueven servicios de apoyo intensivos en conocimiento pueden prestar atención al hecho de que los agricultores más innovadores y con mayor educación son también los que más interactúan con los SID, incluso en un contexto en el que predominan las pequeñas y medianas explotaciones agrícolas. 農場におけるイノベーションは、技術的、環境的、社会的な農業セクターの課題に対応する上で極めて重要である。我々は、特定のアントレプレナー的属性 (市場指向性と学習指向性)および、イノベーション能力としての農家のイノベーティブな姿勢と人的資本によって、農家の研究開発サービス (research & development services: RDS)へのアクセスが増強されるという仮説を立てた。本稿では、小規模~中規模農家が多い状況である、スペインの地方 (バレンシア州)の農家のサンプルにおいて、これら因子の役割を探索する。ロジスティック方程式によるモデル化のアプローチにより、RDSのユーザーとなる可能性が増加する条件をテストした。知見から、戦略的能力とイノベーション能力に加えて高いレベルの正規教育の学歴が、RDSの利用に対する農家の積極的な姿勢と正の相関関係にある一方で、最も大きい農家集団ではRDSを導入する可能性がかなり低いことが示唆される。小規模~中規模の農家が多い状況においてさえも、知識集約型のサポートサービスを促進する政策が、よりイノベーティブで教養のある農家がRDSとよりうまく相互作用できる者でもあるということに留意することができる。
