Contributions by Italian scholars to regional science

Regional science in Italy has a long tradition marked by the distinctive characteristics of the country, namely the presence of multiple and dynamic medium‐sized cities, a traditional and persistent spatial dualism, and the success of intermediate income regions marked by the presence of SMEs. Particularly the third element has led to the creation of an “interpretative paradigm”—known as “endogenous development,” or “development from below”—today well‐structured and established in the discipline. It is the generator of innovative theoretical concepts and interpretations. These features are interesting and justify the intention of this paper to provide an analysis of the development of regional science through the major innovative contributions of Italian scholars. La ciencia regional en Italia tiene una larga tradición marcada por ciertas características distintivas del país, como la presencia de múltiples ciudades dinámicas de tamaño medio, un dualismo espacial tradicional y persistente, y el éxito de las regiones de ingresos intermedios caracterizadas por la presencia de PYMES. En particular, este tercer elemento ha llevado a la creación de un “paradigma interpretativo”, conocido como “desarrollo endógeno” o “desarrollo desde la base”, hoy en día bien estructurado y establecido en la disciplina. Asimismo, es el generador de conceptos teóricos e interpretaciones innovadoras. Estas características son interesantes y justifican la intención de este estudio de analizar el desarrollo de la ciencia regional a través de las principales contribuciones innovadoras del sector académico italiano. イタリアの地域科学研究には、同国の優れた特徴が表れた長い伝統がある。その特徴とは、多数の活発な中規模都市の存在、古くから変わらずにある空間的二元性、中小企業の存在に示される中間所得層地域の成功である。特に3つめの特徴により、「内生的発展」または「下からの開発 (development from below)」としても知られる「解釈的パラダイム」がもたらされ、今日ではそれが規律の中に強固に組み込まれている。「解釈的パラダイム」とはイノベーションの理論的概念と理論的解釈を生み出すものである。これらの特徴は、興味深いものであり、イタリアの研究者らによる主なイノベーティブな研究を通じて地域科学研究の発展の分析を行うという本稿の目的を正当化する。
