The Relevance Of Pollution‐Related Input‐Output Models For Regional Environmental Management In Hungary: A Critical Approach

Abstract

ABSTRACT A principal function of the well‐known pollution‐related input‐output models (PRIO) is to serve some kind of regional or national welfare control, that is, to maximize the value of a multidimensional welfare profile. This latter function includes economic, environmental and social‐political values that alter in accordance with the given social system. Research into the practical application of PRIO models in socialist countries shows, inter alia, a lack of suitable data, methodological problems of linearity and determinism which all hinder their optimal application. Another group of serious obstacles is related to the political‐economic mechanism of the centrally controlled and planned economies.
