The "Wage Curve" and Long-term Unemployment: A Cautionary Note

Abstract

This paper analyzes the effect of the long-term unemployed on the Blanchflower and Oswald (1990) "wage curve." It is found using the 1982 General Household Survey that, contrary to Blanchflower and Oswald, the long-term unemployed do effectively drop out of the labor market. The "wage curve" effect remains but only in terms of the short-term unemployed. Copyright 1992 by Blackwell Publishers Ltd and The Victoria University of Manchester
