Level of Quality for Minimum Cost of Manufacture to a Specification

Abstract

If loaves of bread are required to have at least a certain specified weight, the average weight must be greater than this in order to avoid an undue proportion of loaves that are underweight. The higher the average weight the greater is the cost of manufacture but the smaller is the cost due to the occurrence of underweight loaves. What average weight gives the lowest total cost? Mr Hepburn's article is about this type of problem.
