One‐Pass Selection of a Sample with Probability Proportional to Size

Abstract

This note shows how the method of McLeod and Bellhouse for simple random sampling without replacement can be adapted to yield a sample with selection probabilities proportional to a size measure, in a single pass through a list of sampling units without knowing the total size of the list. A variation given by Pinkham can also be adapted: this calls for the generation of a much lower number of random deviates.
