A Measure of Winter Severity

Abstract

A measure of winter severity of interest in the planning of capital investment in the gas industry is chosen. its probability distribution is derived from historical series of temperature data some of which stretch back into the nineteenth century. The data relate to 17 locations in Great Britain so that regional variations can be examined. The significance of past winters which were severe is discussed in particular. Some of the practical difficulties inherent in the translation from temperature to gas demand are mentioned and the application of the results in a mathematical model is briefly described.
