Application of the Theory of Sampling with Probabilities Proportional to Size on Industrial Surveys

Abstract

A discussion is given of how a relatively small inquiry into investment plans of Dutch firms, and especially of the larger ones in each industry, leads after careful interpretation to reliable estimates of planned investments for the whole economy. The most important statistical methods used are: (1) stratification of the sample results into size classes of the firms; (2) application of estimators for sampling with probabilities proportional to size (p.p.s.) without replacement. In §6 the derivation of an estimator of the population mean for sampling according to p.p.s. without replacement is given. The approximate estimator holds for samples of medium size.
