The emergence and role of common interest groups in secondary information

Abstract

Four common interest groups, whose members are organizations engaged in some aspect of secondary information activity, are examined in terms of the circumstances giving rise to their formation; a historical profile of each is included. Specifically, the International Council of Scientific Unions Abstracting Board (ICSUAB), the National Federation of Abstracting and Indexing Services (NFAIS), the Information Industry Association (IIA), and the Association of Information and Dissemination Centers (ASIDIC) are discussed. These groups have played crucial roles in the development of an American information awareness, in influencing the direction taken by this segment of the information community, and in affecting the economic growth of hundreds of organizations.
