The state of secondary access services: Social sciences

Abstract

Secondary access services available to American social scientists include bibliographies for the academic disciplines and a large variety of specialized services for subdisciplines and interdisciplinary fields. Nearly all originated during three decades of intensive development between 1950 and 1980. Coverage of journal literature is more extensive than coverage of monographs and data sources. Clearer differentiation among services in overlapping fields is needed. The transition from paper‐based to computer‐based services offers many possibilities for improved access to the literature, but difficulties attributable to intellectual and organizational characteristics of the social sciences may be relatively unaffected by technological change.
