Two modes of computer assisted instruction in a library reference course

Abstract

A study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of a set of computer based teaching materials within a graduate library reference course. Evaluation of the materials and techniques was conducted both for the purpose of revision and also to determine the overall effectiveness of the materials as integral parts of the course. Techniques and findings were reported illustrating how evaluation during the formative stages enabled the instructor to selectively revise the materials. Evaluation of the materials as aids to student learning within the course revealed that they were effective in teaching some aspects of the material although student attitudes toward computer techniques tended to become more negative. Implications of the techniques and results were discussed.
