Abstract

Although indexing coverage of national and international news items has been handled well by the New York Times Index and other sources, similar coverage of items which are of local or regional interest has either been non‐existent or provided for by card files which make the information accessible only with difficulty. A study was conducted to determine the feasibility of tagging terms from newspaper headlines, adding descriptors for enrichment, and then using a computer to reformat the data and print out a keyword index. The results of the study indicate that this would be a straightforward, relatively inexpensive method of increasing the accessibility of this kind of information.
