Prohibition of Discriminatory Laws and Practices Against Women’s Rights in Nigeria

Abstract

Nigeria has ratified several international and regional treaties; and other protocols in order to fulfill its obligation in promoting and protecting the rights of Nigerian women. However, women in Nigeria still face many discriminatory practices under the law. Nigeria is inherently patriarchal, this can be attributed to the influence of customs and various religions practiced in Nigeria. Women and girls are often victims of discriminatory practices by the state and the society which is mostly done by men. The 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender. However, customary laws and religious laws continue to threaten and restrict women’s rights; these factors have contributed significantly to the discrimination women face. In as much as the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and others laws have been promulgated to improve the status of women in Nigeria, still many laws and statues condone domestic violence against women and discriminate against women in Nigeria.
