Abstract
Access to student support services is critical for improving learning outcomes and overall well-being among students, particularly in higher education. This study investigated the specific challenges faced by students at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Lodwar Campus in accessing these essential services. Using a descriptive cross-sectional design, data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to a sample of 80 second- and third-year students selected via systematic random sampling. Quantitative and qualitative responses were analyzed using SPSS Version 18 to provide a comprehensive view of the issues at hand. The findings indicated that 62.5% of students encountered significant barriers in utilizing support services. Key challenges included time constraints, affecting 62% of respondents, limited awareness of available services (8%), lack of direct support (10%), and physical distance from service centers (4%). Despite the availability of academic support (92.5%) and health services (87.5%), other critical services, such as mentorship (28.8%) and financial aid (31.3%), were underutilized. The study emphasized that addressing these barriers is crucial to improving students’ access to support services. Recommendations include implementing structured awareness campaigns, enhancing communication strategies, and offering services during flexible hours or through online platforms to accommodate students’ demanding schedules. Such interventions are vital to creating a supportive learning environment tailored to the diverse needs of KMTC Lodwar students. By improving access to these services, student outcomes, both academically and personally, can be significantly enhanced, ensuring their success and well-being during their educational journey.
