Factors Affecting Household Cash Usage in Turkey

Abstract

This study investigates cash usage in POS transactions by analyzing the data of the Methods of Payment Survey conducted by CBRT in 2020. The probit model shows that demographic factors, transactional characteristics, and attitudes judgments towards cash affect individuals’ preference to pay with cash. The main finding of the study is that attitudes and judgments arising from the features of cash that distinguish cash from other payment methods are explanatory, in addition to demographic and transaction characteristics. The results demonstrate that the individuals stating that cash usage contributes to budget controlling and safety are more likely to use cash.
