Abstract

We performed a retrospective analysis of Argentina’s monetary system, focusing on its limitations to satisfy the requirements of the national economy. We describe the various aspects associated with the need to establish a central bank as the governing body of that system. At the same time we present the different conceptions of functions and objectives of such entity, as reflected in the discussions and draft legislation previous to its creation, taking into account the international context as a guideline to understand these differences. Finally, the paper provides a description of the institution that was finally created and details its first operations and tools for the implementation of monetary policy.
