The Crisis of Independence and Impartiality of the Election Commission of Bangladesh: A Study on the Eleventh National Parliamentary Election

Abstract

An unbiased and independent election commission is the only option available for holding free, fair, and credible elections. The objectives of this study are to identify the specific causal factors of the independence and impartiality of election commission of Bangladesh and to assess the potential solutions to the Election Commission of Bangladesh apparent problems with independence and impartiality, as well as to uncover the evident reasons for such problems. This research has been carried out by using qualitative research methodology. According to the findings of this study, there is a significant gap between political parties and stakeholders in terms of electoral government. The Election Commission had to face many obstacles in organizing the 11thNational Parliamentary elections. On the other hand, questions have been raised about the independence and impartiality of the Election Commission of Bangladesh. In arranging elections, political parties have generally shown a lack of cooperation. In some cases, the electoral system is being questioned due to the insufficient role of the government during the election. In addition, this study has reviewed various solutions to deal with the crisis of independence and impartiality facing the Election Commission of Bangladesh. Legal and economic autonomy need to prioritize as components of fair elections. Legal and economic autonomy have been prioritized as components of credible elections. On the other hand, the matter of giving priority to the formation of a neutral and accountable government in the formation of the Election Commission and the government during the election has been discussed.
