El efecto de la desnutrición crónica infantil sobre el desempeño educativo de los estudiantes peruanos de segundo de primaria

Abstract

El objetivo de la investigación es estudiar el efecto de la nutrición infantil temprana en el desempeño académico de los estudiantes peruanos. Partimos de la hipótesis que la mejora en la nutrición experimentada en el pasado (2008 - 2012) ha influido de manera positiva e importante en el cambio de tendencia en los indicadores de rendimiento académico observados en el presente (2013 - 2015). Encontramos evidencia a favor de la hipótesis. En particular un aumento de una desviación estándar del indicador nutricional genera un efecto positivo y significativo en poco más de 20 puntos en las pruebas de lenguaje y matemáticas. Además estos efectos tienden a ser mayores en poblaciones más vulnerables. De esta manera, el progreso educativo depende críticamente de los progresos alcanzados en el desarrollo infantil temprano. A nivel de políticas públicas lo anterior nos permite recomendar la necesidad de aprovechar espacios de articulación entre las estrategias de salud y educación. Este estudio se desarrolló como resultado del XVII Concurso Anual de Investigación CIES 2015, con el auspicio del Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) - Canada, el Centro Internacional de Investigaciones para el Desarrollo (IDRC, por sus siglas en inglés) y la Fundación Manuel J. Bustamante de la Fuente.
