Empobrecimiento por gasto de bolsillo en salud

Abstract

Los pagos por Gastos de Bolsillo en Salud (GBS) pueden sumergir a un hogar en un estado de pobreza extrema en la medida que estos gastos son efectuados a expensas de la adquisición de otros bienes y servicios. Mediante un análisis descriptivo, el presente estudio trata de caracterizar la estructura del gasto de salud haciendo énfasis en los gastos de bolsillo. Los resultados indican que el gasto de bolsillo financia más del 50% del gasto de salud y empobrece al 1% de hogares no pobres. Por otro lado, a través de la estimación de un Modelo Lineal de Sesgo de Selección se encuentra que, cualquiera sea la capacidad de gasto, la carga del GBS es similar para todos los hogares. Este estudio se desarrolló como resultado del XII Concurso Anual de Investigación CIES 2010, con el auspicio del Centro Internacional de Investigaciones para el Desarrollo (IDRC, por sus siglas en inglés).
