Achieving Integration of the Roma in the EU: Descriptive Representation as a Policy Solution for Romania

Abstract

In the content of this paper the author looks for policy solutions for improving the status of the Roma within the EU and particularly in Romania. The theoretical model is taken from studies on descriptive representation of prominent minorities in the US with the purpose of creating an effective policy model. The first part of the paper contains an introduction to the socio-political situation of the Roma and how is it linked to representation, the second part provides a general theoretical discussion of descriptive representation, while in the third part I analyze the representation of the Roma in Romania, and make theory-grounded proposals for its improvement.
