Revisiting urban planning and design practices in a small city in Florida

Abstract

In many local jurisdictions in Florida, practitioners have overlooked the general urban planning and design process and have helped to create a politically optimised planning structure. Politically optimised practice, as observed through this study, has produced errors in acquiring knowledge of urban morphology for future potential, understanding preferences in urban policy structure, and providing consistency between planning policies. The errors have then created inefficient planning practices. Consequently, there have been demands for more efficient and effective urban planning and design practices. According to the results of this study, the general urban planning and design process provides a guide for better collaborative work between planners, the public and politicians, and offers better performance through a scientific planning approach.
