Abstract

This paper covers Sony Pictures Entertainment’s (SPE’s) multi-year strategic transformation of video mastering from High Definition (2K)/tape-focused workflows to Ultra High Definition (4K HDR) all-digital workflows utilising the Interoperable Mastering Format (IMF) standard. As a part of Sony Corporation, which in 2011–12 began to develop 4K television sets and playback devices, SPE had a unique opportunity to transform content creation and mastering workflows to meet these emerging marketplace needs. Leveraging the then-emerging SMPTE IMF standard, Sony’s technologists developed and iterated experimental mastering workflows to a) meet the needs of early 4K video delivery to Sony TVs and b) prove out the all-digital 4K IMF strategy as an internal process enhancement. SPE’s early and aggressive embrace of the IMF workflow has proved out over the years with increased efficiency, inventory visibility, decreased costs-to-serve and faster time to market in mastering and servicing workflows globally.
