Abstract

The number of approved patent applications related to the key enabling technologies decreased in Croatia, whereas the number of validated European patents increased in the period from 1997 to 2018. Strengthening the importance of European patent applications increases the importance of usingthe key enabling technologies in relation to their creation. The indicators of absolute and relative technological specialisation were used at NUTS2 level in the analysis of patents identified as key enabling technologies. These patents are concentrated in the Zagreb City area. However, the relative importance of the Panonian Croatia and the Northern Croatia in the field of key enabling technologies increased in the period 2012-2018 as compared to the period 1997-2001. Due to the decline in the number of approved patent applications in this area, it is not possible to address the issue of technological specialisation. Given the strengthened importance of the use of key enabling technologies, it is necessary to encourage policy programmes that will make greater use of these technologies as a basis for the innovative product developments.
