Some Characteristics Of Trade In The Dubrovnik Region Between The Two World Wars

Abstract

The paper investigates the trade situation in the Dubrovnik region between the two world wars from a historical point of view. A large number of trade and crafts shops was opened in the early years after World War I. However, most of them went bankrupt mainly because of poor management. Yet, in the 1920s the situation in the retail sector stabilised with a more powerful development of the wholesale trade. The latter expanded into the markets of southern Hercegovina, the Montenegrin coast, and the Neretva Valley region, i.e., southern Croatia. A serious economic crisis caused a decrease in trade. By the end of the crisis in the late 30s and with a gradual increase in employment, including growing exports and imports, and particulary the development of a new economic activity – tourism - trade saw a new upward trend. It was one of the top economic activities in the Dubrovnik region. At the same time, some trade firms gained in significance, which placed them among Yugoslavia's leading firms in certain areas.
