Attività produttive e commercio in Calabria nel settecento

Abstract

This article focuses on the factors that potentially hindered development and the failure of reforms implemented during the eighteenth century in the Kingdom of Naples under Austrian viceroys and, starting from 1734, under the Bourbons. The economy, which relied on foreign powers for the supply of raw materials, and a social system rooted in the outdated ancient regime, prevented the region from pursuing a policy of developing manufacturing activities and modernizing means of production. Instead, the emphasis returned to securing agricultural income.
