Abstract

Results of a survey of 100 National Health Service Corps (NHSC) physicians in 10 east coast states (94% response rate) indicate that 56 have plans to locate in a rural area after their service obligation is complete and 15 have not yet decided. Those who decide for a rural practice value personal and community factors to a higher degree than professional factors and are more likely to have a primary care practice.
