Abstract

This study describes the participation of community health nurses in specifying services needed by the elderly in a midwestern community of 30,000. In response to a request from a group in the community which was charged with allocating private funds to aid the elderly, 4 commmunity health nurses, who were the only nurses serving the city and surrounding county, were asked to assess needs for further services for the elderly. Because of their provision of services and contact with clients in their homes, community nurses may help locate not only health care needs but may call attention to other kinds of unmet needs. The nurses and 124 individuals 65 years old and over evaluated needs for additional services in 23 health and social service categories. The list of services which nurses and the elderly rated from high priority for additional service to low priority is shown and the evaluations of the two groups are compared.
