A critique of some current approaches to the problem of drug abuse

Abstract

There is at present a growing realization that the rehabilitation of a committed drug user is difficult even if the user is well motivated, and it almost always fails if the user is not motivated. These therapeutic realities have resulted in a growing insistence on preventive education efforts both within the schools and in the community. The demands for preventive education have been accompanied by an increasing focus on methods of apprehending and punishing the pushers. In this brief review, the author comments on some of the current approaches.
